Cruelty to Australian cattle in Indonesia

Saturday, June 4, 2011

Sitting here in the comfort of my home, I am deeply disturbed watching this news story on the cruelty of Australian cattle in Indonesia. On the news, they showed a very graphic footage of the slaughter ot Australian cattle in Indonesian abbatoirs. I must say that I was, and am so upset, rattled and deeply disturbed by the images I saw.

It was shown that Australian live cattle export to Indonesia is a big $$$$$ industry. The arguments against banning live animal export appear based on greed and cultural difference allowances. It is the livestock who are the ones suffering and being tortured NIGHT AFTER NIGHT whilst people make excuses for these practices.

These Indonesian abattoir workers beat the cattle over the head with chains, break their tails, tie their legs so they slip over on the wet floor (repeatedly), they get their feet caught in some kind of hole on the flooring (for what purpose the ‘hole’ is I don’t know), they have their throats slit while still alive (not stunned beforehand) over and over again (up to 30 or more times) and left to die, in some cases taking up to half an hour to die, they have water splashed on them while they are on the ground, their eyes are gouged, they are kicked in the head many times, dragged around on the floor…and more.

Since this has come out, there have been calls to ban the live export of Australian cattle to Indonesia, as well as sending some of our animal ‘experts’ over there to ‘retrain’ the Indonesian employees. Were they not trained before this, like when they started working in the abattoir? Or, are they just so cruel within themselves they don’t even register the suffering they cause? I am also led to believe there are no animal cruelty laws in Indonesia (I may be wrong).  Either way, IT IS AN ABSOLUTE DISGRACE. THEY SHOULD BE SO ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES.

I feel so strongly about this that I pray these workers, employers and abattoirs are shut down and they sent to prison for the rest of their lives. I feel Australian should be banning live exportation of animals and make a bold statement to the rest of the world that inhumane treatment of livestock is NOT ACCEPTABLE AND WILL NOT BE TOLERATED!

The most heartbreaking thing about all of this for me is that other cattle waiting to be killed actually see their friends get abused in these ways and stand there trembling in fear…literally trembling all over…

To a man whose mind is free there is something even more intolerable in the sufferings of animals than in the sufferings of man. For with the latter it is at least admitted that suffering is evil and that the man who causes it is a criminal. But thousands of animals are uselessly butchered every day without a shadow of remorse. If any man were to refer to it, he would be thought ridiculous. And that is the unpardonable crime.
